A quick excerpt from the guide:
Code Geass (pronounced gee-s, with a "hard g") is a sci-fi series set in the year 2010 of the Imperial Calendar. The series takes place in an alternate world where Japan is conquered by the Britannia Empire. The Empire (which is actually based in North and South America, not Europe) rules as the world's only superpower. Japan is devastated in the invasion. Its people are stripped of their dignity and history, their country is callously renamed "Area 11" and the people are referred to as "Elevens". Even the very mention of the country's former name is discouraged. The Elevens still have some fight left in them though, and pockets of violent rebellion begin to appear. The resistance groups are bolstered when a powerful and mysterious masked rebel named Zero appears and begins to wreak havoc on the forces of the Empire.
