Some anime that (almost) made me cry

Anime is an art form. Like all art, it’s meant to evoke some emotion. There are some anime that are so beautiful, so touching, that you often forget they’re just ink.

Now, like most guys, I’m not a very emotional person. It takes a lot to get me all teary-eyed. However, there’s been some anime moments where I couldn’t help but get a little misty.

Wolf’s Rain

This story takes place In a post-apocalyptic future where humans live in domed cities surrounded by wasteland, and wolves are assumed to be two hundred years extinct. But wolves do walk among them, disguising themselves as humans (we’re never told exactly how) in order to survive in the human world. In Wolf’s Rain four young wolves set out on a dangerous quest to find that which legend promises them: Paradise. This series has many touching moments throughout. Toboe, the youngest wolf, is so vulnerable and needy that you really do feel sympathy for him. The relationships between the human characters are also very poignant. Then there’s the death…oh the death. I won’t spoil the story here, but late in the series there’s definitely a sense of sorrow and loss that I can’t say I’ve felt in any other series.

Full Metal Alchemist

Although it’s mostly an upbeat action story, Full Metal Alchemist does have a LOT of touching moments. The main characters are the Elric brothers, Ed and Al. Ed is the famous Fullmetal Alchemist - who almost lost his little brother Al in an accident that occurred when the boys tried to resurrect their dead mother. Edward managed to contain his brother’s soul in a suit of armor. While he did mangage to save his brother’s life, he had to pay a great price himself. To get back what they lost the brothers embark on a journey to find the legendary Philosophers StoneThe story just doesn’t pull any punches. Right from the first few episodes we’re given the topics of death, lost hope, and betrayal. The real emotional engine of the series is the relationship between Ed and Al, as the two boys go through turmoil that no one of any age should have to deal with. By the end of this series you just want to give them both a hug and tell them everything will be okay.

Grave of the Fireflies

Man, this one is just….gah! It’s amazing how this movie can be both beautiful and severely depressing at the same time. The plot follows an orphaned boy and his sister in post-war Tokyo as they do their best to survive in a very cruel world. It’s sad, very sad. But it’s also a story about the will to survive, despite the hurt and the pain. It’s guaranteed to make you think, but more importantly, it’ll make you feel

Saikano

Saikano is the story of Shuuji and Chise, third year students at a high school in Hokkaido. Chise is a very shy and awkward girl, and is just now relaying her feelings to ShuujiWhile their love is still just blooming, Japan is attacked by a foreign enemy. In the midst of an air raid, Shuuji gazes upon a sight he can hardly believe….Chise turns into an incredible destructive weapon, her arms changing to weapons that shoot down the enemy planes.Their lives were never the same after that day.I know this sounds like a action-packed shounen anime, but the focus is really more on character development and the relationships between the main characters. To be honest, the parts of the story outside of the relationships aren’t fleshed out very well. There’s a lot of other flaws with the series too, but the events that transpire are very tragic and the characters are reasonably developed. If you allow yourself to care about the characters even a little bit, you’ll be sucked in. That, I think, is this series’ saving grace.
