Anime with a Feminist message
Eastern Michigan’s Echo Online publication has an article about a Women’s Studies scholar that’s using Anime as a medium for the message of the role of the woman in Japanese culture. It’s an interesting read, and a great example of the wide range of topics that Anime covers.
From the article:
“I think it’s very important for everyone to learn some factual information about the very strong feminine elements within Japanese culture,” Endresak said. “Many people in Western countries tend to view Japan as a strongly patriarchal society, but that is not a clear understanding of the true nature of Japanese culture.”
The presentation of “Otogi Zoshi” was part of Women’s History Month and was envisioned and executed by Endresak. A lifelong fan of anime, Endresak hoped to share the series’ insight into women’s issues with the EMU community.

I think this is another great example of how the myriad themes and excellent writing and presentation of Anime can make it a great teaching tool. I expect to see more and more college-level courses to do the same in the future.
